New Mesothelioma Treatment Enters Clinical Trial

Patients suffering from mesothelioma may have more options for treatment in the near future Following promising results in an early test involving animal testing, Baylor College of Medicine Lung Institute is moving forward with a clinical trial of a new mesothelioma treatment. The new mesothelioma treatment combines immunotherapy with a drug designed to accelerate cell death.

A Deadly Disease

Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure - Riddle & BrantleyMalignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that targets the lungs. In most cases, mesothelioma is fatal. Most patients diagnosed with mesothelioma die within a year and a half of diagnosis. Approximately 3,000 people are diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma in the United States every year. Many of these cases are the result of exposure to asbestos. “Progress in advancing long-term survival in pleural mesothelioma has been minimal for decades,” according to Dr. Bryan Burt, associate professor of surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and lead investigator for the study. “The benefit of the current standard treatments for pleural mesothelioma has plateaued.”

Promising Results for New Mesothelioma Treatment

Recent testing on laboratory mice has yielded encouraging results. The treatment for mesothelioma combines an IV-administered immunotherapy drug called Nivolumab and a modified adenovirus called MTG201, designed specifically to target cancer cells. According to a statement from the Baylor College of Medicine, the combination therapy has seen “remarkable” results in animal testing.
“This therapy eradicates mouse mesothelioma tumors, rapidly and consistently in an aggressive mouse model of mesothelioma.” -Dr. Bryan Burt
The Mesothelioma Treatment Center hopes to achieve similar results in the clinical trial. Researchers are seeking 12 patients to participate in the trial. Potential participants must be diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma and have had chemotherapy.
