Penumbra JET 7 Xtra Flex catheters have been linked to hundreds of cases of serious injury and even death.  As of January 27, 2021, more than 200 medical device reports (MDRs) have been filed with the FDA and at least 14 deaths have been linked to defective Penumbra catheters. To date, the Penumbra JET 7 Xtra Flex catheters have been linked to serious defects including expansion, ballooning, rupture, breakage, total separation, and exposure of internal support coils near the tip of the Jet 7 Xtra Flex catheter during the thrombectomy procedure.

What is the Penumbra JET 7 Xtra Flex Catheter?

Penumbra Catheter Lawsuit Attorneys - Riddle & BrantleyThe Penumbra JET 7 Xtra Flex catheter is a medical device used to remove blood clots from vessels inside the brain of stroke patients during a surgical procedure known as a thrombectomy. The catheter is used on surgery patients in circumstances where first-line interventions have not been successful, or when a patient does not qualify for medications or a stent retriever (mechanical) thrombectomy. Recent evidence, however, has shown that these catheters have an exceptionally high risk of expanding or rupturing during surgery, often causing serious injuries. The FDA recently issued a warning letter concerning Penumbra’s urgent recall of all configurations of the Penumbra JET 7 Reperfusion Catheter using Xtra Flex Technology, including the Penumbra JET 7 Xtra Flex Catheter, due to the high risk of serious injury and unexpected death when used to remove clots in stroke patients. The FDA’s warning letter states that the manufacturer has found that “the JET 7 Xtra Flex catheter is not able to withstand the same burst pressures to failure as the manufacturer’s other large bore aspiration catheters.”
