Elmiron Eye Disease Risk
In 2018, Dr. Neiraj Jan and his associates published a letter in the Journal of Urology, alerting readers to their findings of retinal pigmentary changes in 6 patients who were undergoing long-term therapy with Elmiron. The researchers found that patients with this condition may have injury to the retina and the underlying retinal pigment epithelium. The case published focused on 6 female patients with interstitial cystitis who visited their doctors between May 2015 and October 2017 with pigmentary maculopathy. None of the patients had any family history of retinal disease but all had used Elmiron for long periods of time. Maculopathy of the eye is a progressive disease which affects the center of the retina and can lead to vision loss. This disease is usually found in both eyes and affects a part of the eye in the back of the retina called the macula. The macula controls the ability to read, see detail, recognize faces and colors and focus central vision. Potential Elmiron-caused eye disease such as pigmentary maculopathy can lead to serious and life-changing conditions such as permanent blindness.Recent Elmiron Eye Disease Studies
In May 2019, the same team of researchers submitted a new study of ten interstitial cystitis patients who had taken pentosan and experienced macular disease. The most common symptoms were problems with reading and difficulty adapting to dim lighting. Eye examinations revealed pigmentary maculopathy. In October 2019 the first clinical population-based Elmiron study was conducted. Researchers at Kaiser Permanente found of the 140 patients who took Elmiron for at least 5 years, 24% showed eye damage which increased when patients were exposed to higher doses of Elmiron. The Elmiron lawsuits claim that this drug causes an eye disorder called maculopathy as well as other disorders of the retina that could lead to blindness. Anyone who took Elmiron and suffered maculopathy or other vision problems may be eligible to file a lawsuit against Elmiron.Elmiron Eye Disease Lawsuits
