Ophthalmology Researchers Link Elmiron Use to Maculopathy
Elmiron is the brand name for pentosan polysulfate or PPS. Researchers at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta noticed “a unique pigmentary maculopathy” in a group of patients who were prescribed PPS and decided to investigate if there was a link between their pigmentary maculopathy and Elmiron. What the researchers discovered was that “a unique pigmentary maculopathy is strongly associated with chronic exposure to the IC drug PPS.” These alarming findings were first published in the Review of Ophthalmology. The same findings were echoed by a group of Canadian ophthalmologists who, in an article appearing in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, concluded that their research “suggests a significant risk of macular toxicity for PPS-treated patients.” What these researchers also discovered was that many patients are diagnosed with these eye injuries, but they are attributed to age-related causes without further investigation as to the link between possible drug toxicity. This means that many Elmiron patients may have suffered eye injuries that were mis-diagnosed — often as age-related macular degeneration. This discovery has prompted researchers to urge medical practitioners to carefully check for links between eye injuries and Elmiron use.Research Shows One-Quarter of Elmiron Patients Suffer Injuries
Even more alarming Elmiron eye damage research was published later.
According to a study published in October 2019 by the American Academy of Ophthalmology:
“They found that about one-quarter of patients with significant exposure to Elmiron showed definite signs of eye damage, and that this medication toxicity could masquerade as other known retinal conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration or pattern dystrophy.”
This research goes on to show that of the 91 patients who agreed to be examined, 22 “showed clear signs of drug toxicity.” This drug toxicity is what researchers believe is linked to their findings of high rates of eye injuries in Elmiron users.
