  • Perineal use of talcum powder may increase the risk of uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, and mesothelioma.
  • Talc products, including Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder, may contain asbestos, and lawsuits claim the company failed to warn consumers.
  • Legal claims may still be possible, but statutes of limitations vary, and family members can pursue wrongful death cases.

The American Cancer Society, The World Health Organization (WHO), among others, have recognized the link between the use of talc products by women and an increased risk of developing reproductive cancers such as cancers of the uterus and ovaries.

Many women have used talc over the years for feminine hygiene reasons and are now finding out that talc-based baby powder may cause uterine cancer, mesothelioma, and possibly other forms of cancer.

Talcum Powder and Uterine Cancer (and Other Cancer) Risk: What are the Facts?

Talc is a clay mineral mined in its soft-solid form. It is made of hydrated magnesium silicate and is known as the softest mineral on earth.

Once crushed, this mineral becomes talcum powder. Johnson & Johnson developed a scented form of talcum powder (Baby Powder) in the late 19th century. It was originally marketed to women following childbirth. Talc-based baby powder became popular as a hygiene product for women and for use on babies.

In recent years, however, the FDA has found evidence of asbestos contamination in Johnson & Johnson talcum powder. For decades, allegations have been made that the company was aware that its talc-based baby powder may be contaminated with cancer-causing asbestos… and did nothing to warn or protect consumers about potential ovarian cancer, mesothelioma, and uterine cancer risk.

Talcum Powder and Uterine Cancer Risk

A 2010 study by Stalo Karageorgi reported for the first time a link between genital (perineal) use of talcum powder and uterine cancer risk. This study suggested that talc may cause inflammation in the endometrium (the lining of the uterus).

This could lead to endometrial cancer, which according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine is the most common type of uterine cancer.

Our results suggest that perineal talcum powder use increases the risk of endometrial cancer, particularly among postmenopausal women.

What is Uterine Cancer?

Uterine cancer or “womb cancer” occurs in the muscular organ where the fetus grows when a woman becomes pregnant.

There are two major types of uterine cancer:

  • Uterine Sarcoma: These cancers are found in the myometrium (muscle layer) or the supporting connective tissue of the uterus. Subtypes of this cancer include leiomyosarcomas and endometrial stromal sarcoma.
  • Endometrial cancers: These cancers begin in the endometrium (the cells that make up the inner lining of the uterus). Subtypes of these cancers include adenocarcinoma, carcinosarcoma, squamous cell carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, small cell carcinoma and transitional carcinoma.

Symptoms associated with uterine cancer potentially caused by talcum powder use include:

  • Pain
  • Vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Tumors
  • Unexplained weight loss.

Since 1971, there have been more than 20 studies linking talc powder to reproductive cancers. Thousands of talcum powder lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson for allegedly failing to warn women of the risks of developing reproductive cancers from using its popular talcum-based powders (Baby Powder and Shower to Shower).

In addition, consumers have also filed lawsuits after developing mesothelioma potentially due to baby powder. Mesothelioma is a dangerous and generally terminal disease caused by asbestos exposure.

Is There a Statute of Limitations for Talcum Powder and Uterine Cancer and Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits?

Talcum powder lawsuits are product liability cases. The statute of limitations differs in every state. Usually, these statutes run from 2 to 10 years, with most states having two-year statutes.

It is important to note, however, that every talc case is unique.

Depending on the circumstances, the clock may start ticking from the date of diagnosis or from the date you found out talcum powder may have contributed to your cancer.

Due to the potential Statute of Limitations in your state, now is the time to have you talcum powder uterine cancer claim (or other form of cancer claim) investigated.

In some cases, family members can file a wrongful death claim for the loss of a loved one from reproductive cancers. Usually, these statutes are on the shorter side. Most average two years.

Does Talcum Powder Cause Uterine Cancer and Other Forms of Cancer?

Thousands of people suffering from uterine cancer (including ovarian cancer and endometrial ovarian cancer) and mesothelioma have filed lawsuits against companies that use talc in their products. Johnson & Johnson is at the center of many recent lawsuits.

Victims claim they developed uterine and other forms of cancer after using the company’s talc-based products for years.

Many of these lawsuits claim that manufacturers such as Johnson & Johnson knew for more than 40 years that their talc-based products contained asbestos. As reported by the New York Times, Johnson & Johnson’s internal documents show the company may have concealed this information from the public for years and refused to put safety warnings on their products or remove them from shelves.
